Note from Featured Speaker
“My holistic research entails the use of reflective writing as a creative methodology to foster participatory communication and provide a voice against gender-based violence (GBV) in South Africa. An aspect of the project, which is in collaboration with the Pulse Lab at McMaster University is the EFECT project. It is centred on tackling the cultural practices of oppression and GBV, incorporating information and communication technology and associated participatory methods like creating social media GIFs and memes as modes of communication on these subject matters. I am looking to advocate the adaptation of such media as viable creative options for transformative pedagogy on addressing GBV and societal plagues in South Africa. I anticipate some implications for teaching and learning in South Africa. One of these is a significant contribution to the transformative educational agenda through digital and social media practices. This has been exemplified using the EFECT project. Another symbolic contribution is the active involvement of students in this transformative practice in creating an enabling environment for participation. In this wise, a closer consideration of creative and participatory methods will prove useful as a vehicular approach to creating more awareness and subsequent calls to action on social issues like GBV.”
