Cyril Chen

About:

Cyril Chen is an interdisciplinary artist and writer, working with animation, illustration, comics, design, sculpture, projection, and installation. Their research-creation practice aims to be multimodal, decolonial, intersectional, and trauma-informed. They are based in the Treaty 3 (Hamilton ON) and Treaty 4 (Regina SK) Territories of so-called Canada.

Cyril is a Master of Arts Candidate in the Communication Studies and New Media department at McMaster University. They recently graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Animation program at Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, and previously studied at NSCAD University, where they obtained open credits from the University of Regina, Dalhousie University and the University of Waterloo. Their Creation Research Project, Transing the Narrative: Positing/Digesting Grief into Dialogic+Equitable Frameworks is focused on exploring how to create a graphic novel an interactive gameplay piece which encourages more understanding and acceptance of gender-diverse identities. Dr. Paula Gardner is their core supervisor.
