Layering and Animating Meaning
Experiences of Black college-to-university transfer students at McMaster University
About
Layering and Animating Meaning was a micro-level investigation of the experiences of Black college-to-university transfer students. This project aimed to highlight the unique challenges faced by this important growing segment of the university’s population. Through this project, we explored and recommended ways of making the transfer process more seamless as well as ways to enhancing institutional capacity for inclusion and equity.
Driven by these goals, this project contributed to the ongoing efforts of the government of Ontario and the wider higher education community to use college-to-university pathways and credit articulation arrangements as a mechanism of social mobility and social justice. While the focus was on Black students, White students were also included to provide a perspective on how different groups experience transferring and settling into university. By so doing, we could acquire more nuanced accounts that can help universities, decision-makers, and other university key stakeholders to develop targeted support that takes into consideration the peculiar differences of each group.
