Transing The Narrative: Exploring Trans and Genderqueer Grief through Graphic Novel Research – Presented at The Canadian Society for the Study of Comics Conference by Cyril Chen

Presentation Overview
On Friday, June 5th, Master of Arts Candidate Cyril Chen presented their talk, Transing The Narrative: Exploring Trans and Genderqueer Grief through Graphic Novel Research at the Canadian Society for the Study of Comics Conference. The annual conference is hosted at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival to be held at the Toronto Metropolitan University on June 4th & 5th, 2026. Their talk focuses on their in-progress comic book, WYLOW: When You Left Our World, a semi-autobiographical comic prototype which they completed for their Master of Arts major creation-research project for the Communications and New Media program at McMaster University. The comic engages with interdisciplinary research, trans suicidality, and aims to bridge the divides of misrepresentation and under-representation of queerness by drawing on universal experiences that allow for more vulnerable and open dialogue.
